For Sin City, Rodriguez (who was also the cinematographer) used a high-definition digital camera, the Sony HDC-950. It starts at about $98,000 and that doesn't include a lens. Rental is maybe $1300 and up per day, depending on your location. Don't forget the HD tapes, running about $35 for 40 minutes.

What, you thought he shot this with some miniDV camcorder?

Thanks for the info; I appreciate it.
Although Robert used the Sony HDC-950 there is a much cheaper DVCPRO HD alternative. A versatile high quality camera I would look at if you are shooting your own film would be the Panasonic HVX-200. It can shoot 1080p at 30 or 24 frames per second or 720p at 60, 30 or 24 frames per second.
