Why is the phillipines called "pearl of the orient"?

Apolinario mabini and Jose Rizal, phillippine national hero , he called his homeland the Pearl of the orient in one of their revolutionary writings during spanish colinization. i guess pearl because it symbolizes something that should be treasured or valued and its a native gemstone in asia. Moreover, the philippine islands have the most beautiful pearls, corals, and shells.
