What are the parts of an orchid plant? What is the "spike"?

The spike on the orchid plant is what many people would consider the "stem." It is the support base for the blooms of the orchid flower, and is dotted with "nodes" or little dark bumps spaced relatively evenly down the spike. Take a look at this diagram:
