The best way to learn to play guitar is to buy a beginning guitar course.Preferably one that has a cd that demonstrates how the lessons should sound when played correctly. Study it and try to practice everything in it and find other musicians that will allow you to just go and watch them play and pick up some tips and technique. Maybe they will let you jam with them, you can learn a lot real fast that way. Learn as many chords as you can, chords are the foundation of all the great guitarists like Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopffler, practice and learn as many scales as you can, get very familiar with the guitar fretboard, know where you are when you are playing. Study the different keys , learn to play a song in every key, this will get you all over the fretboard. Jam with other guitarists and most of all when the going gets tough stick with it, you'll never be any good if you give up too easily. You've got to remember you are teaching your fingers to do something that is not really natural and the only way to be successful is to practice, practice and then practice some more. Even people with short stubby fingers can learn to play guitar well if they practice and stick with it. Sure some of the chords on a guitar are very hard but there is more than one way to make a chord , you've just got to learn your limitations. And remember you don't really have to learn how to read music to be successful, most of the great guitarists that are extremely successful don't read music, for example have you ever seen Mark Knoppfler or Eric Clapton with sheet music in front of them while they are playing? While it would be helpful to learn to read music don't let it become a crutch , use it to learn songs and memorize the music then you'll be able to play without the music. Develop a good ear by listening to and playing all kinds of music. Some simple 50's songs used only the C,Am,F, G7 chords in many different songs, check them out . There are some good guitar links with lessons at http://www.harmonycentral.com. Hope this helps have fun and enjoy.

Take lessons from a teacher with a real education in guitar. Teaching yourself will make you yet another bad player, and God knows we have SO many of those out there as it is.

It depends on what you're into. Pedro the Lion has some very easy stuff to play, like "Lullaby." I've heard U2 (I think it was the "Joshua Tree" album) has some very learnable stuff. Many of Audio Adrenaline's songs were my firsts. Switchfoot's "Stars" is an easy play (Bm is the hardest chord). Coldplay's "Yellow" is a nice one, too (except for the F#m).

If you're into contemporary praise and worship, there are some very easy songs to play. "Blessed" by Matt Redman is (G D Em C). "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" is (G Am C D).

On the other hand, if you're into 50's rock, there's a lot of simple music from back then. For example, "Earth Angel" by the Penguins (G Em C D).

You'll want to keep in mind whether you want to play chords or melody or both. Pick your favorite artists and learn the intros to their best songs. Learn some bass tabs, too. Just have fun. You don't need formal training or need to know anything about music to play guitar!

    Good Luck! Have fun!

I would recommend any song along the lines of the punk genre. They are generally pretty easy to play.

Green Day is VERY VERY elementary. I would suggest trying some of that.
