Why do some people think that English is a race rather than a Nationality..?
Even the 'White English' originate from many different ethnicities such as ...Celt, Anglo - Saxon , Norman, Jute, Roman etc
Isn't England a country..and ANYBODY born there is English??
What do you think??

Because England is part of Britain...... which consists of England (English), Wales (Welsh), Scotland (Scottish) & Northern Ireland (Irish)..... and there's such traditional differences between the places it's almost like they're different races.

I object to being labelled:
White European
White British
I was born in LONDON and I wish to be known as English.

I think genuinely some people don't really think about the difference when they are answering questions. It all means pretty much the same thing either that the British are different from them or the same as them so they use the first word they think of. I'v probably done it myself in the past lmao :) x

Agree with jduck (answerer 7) English are a race and not a nationality.
For one they are not a nation; England is not a country, Britain is. Trying calling an Irishman in a pub English and see if you don't end up with a broken nose.
As far as the mix of ethnicities goes, that was all over a millenia ago. Even amongst Brits it's rare to find someone that much into geneology that they'd think in terms of the various ethnic makeups rather than the homogenous English whole.
Race is a fairly flexible term (generally personally, socially and culturally defined), nationality is a more well defined term (generally politically defined) usually implying citizenship.
I'm Australian and most Australians are from a wide range of ethnicities that can be seen in the way they think, act and view the world around them. Their ethnic background still shapes them (ethnicity) but they give shape to Australia (Nationality).
Over time there has been a build up of what is considered ethnic Australians as their heritage came to mean less and less to them in time (Following WW1 not too many still wanted to be considered as English).

I don't know....it's a common misconception people have. Nationality is the country you are a citizen of.
And Paul C is really wrong. Don't even listen to that. Why would you call an Irish person English...they are from Ireland. Not England. Ireland is a country. Scotland is a country. Great Britain(england) is a country. Separate. As i just said....nationality - what country you have citizenship in....born, raised, lived.
