Home remedy for mange besides burnt motor oil??

Our lab has the mange. We took him to the vet about a month ago and got a treatment for him, but it has come back, and Im not sure that it ever went away completely.Does anyone know of a home remedy that will cure the mange?? It cost us 140 bucks at the vet last time, and we need to save the cash this time if possible. I kind of feel like the money was wasted last time because like I said, Im not sure if it went away or not.

this is pretty tough, and it takes a while, but it works

1-coat the dog with a thick coat of petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
2-let that stay on him 12 hours
(the washing it off is the hard part)
the Vaseline will both smother the disease and moisturize the skin
3-before adding any water to the dog lather his Vaseline covered fur with dawn dish washing liquid, it will take a LOT and u can't use it around his eyes, he will just have to deal with a greasy head for a while
4-fill bath with warm water, a full box of baking soda & 1/2 cup of white vinegar per gallon of water used (you can estimate)
5-rinse and rinse and rinse....make sure the vinegar and baking soda solution gets all over the dog
6-drain the bath and rinse more, it will take a lot of water to get rid off all of the vaseline and dawn detergent

after doing this keep oil (baby oil or cocoa butter oil) on the dog for a couple of weeks
it will be close to impossible getting all of the vaseline out of the dog's fur, but it won't hurt him at all, it will help him...the vinegar is very important also, vinegar is a natural degreaser and it kills bacteria....the baking soda works like a scratch pad, a scrubbing agent that when you mix with vinegar and dishwashing liquid does wonders when cleaning

don't use regular doggy shampoo on him for a while either

you can do this as often as needed

when you use this you also won't have to worry about fleas or mites

Sounds messy.....but you were the only one who actually gave me a remedy to try. Thanks...Im willing to try it.
You do realize that baking soda and vinegar are the ingredients in those volcanos that school kids make, don't you? Just rename him Krakatoa.

Do not put motor oil on your pet!!! That does not work and it can cause more problems!!!!!

You must go back to the vet if you want the mange to go away!!!! Call the vet and maybe they can retreat without seeing the dog again!!!!

The idea of using Ivermectin, unless given by your vet should NOT be considered!!!!!!! It is a potent drug and can cause blindness or death if used incorrectly!!!!!!! It can also cause an anaphylactic reaction in some dogs or some heartworm positive dogs. Please do not use without a vets instructions!!!!!!!!!

    Mange Treatment
    Castor Oil

This mange treatment might be a bit messy, but some say it works like a charm. Pour the castor oil directly on the affected area.

    Garlic Goldenseal

Mix 2 tablespoons of goldenseal powder with 2 tablespoons of garlic powder, and then add 1/4 cup of olive oil. Apply this natural mange treatment by gently massaging it into the skin of the affected area.

Is it demodex mange or sarcoptes? If it is sarcoptes (scabies) then you can buy Revolution for dogs(a once a month topical pesticide) and that should help. If it is demodex than it is something that is a lot harder to treat.
Do not use any motor oil they do not know what theyre talking about. That can cause a serious problem. Ever heard of the devastation an oil spill causes?

I have never heard of burnt motor oil for treating mange.
Your vet should have scraped the skin, to determine the type of mange. Sarcoptic, demodetic, and walking mange are the three I know about. Mange can be very difficult to treat sometimes. It takes persistence, and diligence, good luck.
If your vet did not do a skin scraping, seek a new vet.

Sell your computer and take your dog back to the vet. You did not finish the treatment if it came back. Most all mange is treatable if you do not wait too long and if you follow through. Do not put anything on your animal you would not put on yourself. Burnt motor oil is as primitive as Pinee oil people put on injuries. All this does is burn the heck out of them.

Which type of mange? Demodectic mange takes at least 5 dips, with mitaban, because you do 3 dips, then recheck a skin scraping prior to the 4th. You do 2 dips beyond a negative skin scraping, so the least is 5. It is often more than that.

Sarcoptic mange may only take 1-2 treatments, but it depends on the type of therapy used. If you think that one treatment is going to cure either kind, you obviously didn't research them very well.

Don't try putting motor oil on your dog. That just might be one of the stupidest suggestions that I have ever heard. Clearly, that person has a high level medical degree! Considering that motor oil is considered toxic if ingested and dogs lick themselves regularly, that would be a bright move. Then you could spend money getting your pet treated for petroleum distillate intoxication. I'm sure that would be cheaper.

Wow, and someone actually thinks that you could keep a dog coated in Vaseline for 12 hours! Maybe a dead dog! How disgusting. Do you have any idea how bad for the coat all of these oils are that you are recommending? Not to mention the fact that you will have to coat your entire house in plastic to keep the dog from staining everything it touches. Or you could just put it outside, where it can bake to a nice golden brown!

FYI, you can't "smother" demodectic mange, as it is a normal flora in the hair follicles of all dogs. When it becomes a problem, it is because the pet has an overgrowth. Sarcoptic mange can be so elusive that it may not be found on numerous skin scrapings, so try to find one to smother. Good luck!...I have to remember to write these down to tell my co-workers. People who use these ridiculous "home remedies" are the people who ensure that emergemcy vet clinics will always have business!

Oh, and PLEASE try the the precious idea of using cattle dewomer for your dog! That's a great one too. Do you know the signs of ivermectin toxicity? One of them is a comatose state, and another is death! So if you have a ventilator at home, go ahead and try to dilute the cattle dewormer down to a usable dose for a dog. That ought be a good one! But please post on how much money that idea saved you. Lets see...bottle of ivermectin, $39.00, dog's life, priceless.

Please don't use motor oil. It is extremely toxic, and will cause liver damage/failure.
You can get REVOLUTION at any vet clinic. Some clinics require a blood test first, but many do not, so keep calling until you find the one that doesn't. An older established vet is less likly to require blood work, as they don't have to make as much money from each visit.
Revolution is a topical med, just drops to the skin between shoulder blades. It costs $13 here for one month, and will probably require 2 months application to make certain it doesn't come back.

Are you ALL CRAZY???? DO NOT USE OIL !!!!!! Motor oil is NOt good for any dog!!!! YOur dog can lick the oil and make it VERY ill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
The only way to take care of mange is following a vet recomendations. If you are not happy with the previous vet try another one. If you can not afford to take care of this mange then give it to a rescue organization where they can get it better and find it a home.

I use a cattle dewormer...it gets rid of mange..keeps it from reoccuring and also is a heartworm preventative. Its called Ivermectin...its about 39.00 a bottle but for one dog it lasts. I give it as a shot every month.

There are no adequate home remedies when it comes to treating mange. It can be difficult to treat even with a vet and the proper prescriptions. It often doesn't go away the first time and requires further treatment. If you don't trust this vet, have your records transferred and go to another one. Trust me, this isn't a condition that is easily treatable and your dog does need veterinary care.
