How can I keep an existing apple tree healthy so it will produce good quality apples ?

There's a good size apple tree in my back yard. I only just moved in so I don't know its history or what kind of apples it produces. The budding apples are still quite small-about the size of a golf ball- and I want to know what I can do to keep birds, squirrels and bugs away from the fruit so they will ripen properly.

I would have a tree specialist come to see if it needs to be ferilized just like you would your grass and it may also may need to be trimmed of old dead branches and some new ones that may be in the way of existing branches.
