People of all ages PLEAZE ANSWER THIS!!!!!!!!?

I am doing a survey and i need as many answers as i can get!!!!
ok..
should the requrements for high school graduation be raised lowered or stay the same?
reasons?
please take into mind that the higher the requrements, the less graduating people, more homeless people>> which can cause robberies, less hometime (relationships, relgion, early on jobs, and all over less time for extra curricular things) and this can put a lot of stress on all of the students.
thank you for your time... if you say the right answer, you might get ten points

Well, I have no idea what the requirements for highschool are nowadays. It must be pretty easy though, because an extremely high percentage of people are getting through and clogging up the universities.

Although your consequences are correct, the current high school graduation requirements are extremely low as it is. The requirements are not the problem. Public schools with unions that squander money are the problems. The fact that they are not teaching students to become intelligent thinkers, but to simply regurgitate information is the problem. But, for your survey...they should remain the same.

by raising the requirements, maybe more students would try harder in which case they would have an easier time in College, and have a better chance for a better job, thus improving the economy

Higher graduation requirements would not equal a lower graduation rate if teachers were properly equipped to teach the curriculum (ie smaller class sizes, good teaching materials, assistants for special-needs students, etc).

I think the solution is a system in which students, from a young age, can FAIL. FAIL FAIL FAIL. If you didn't learn all the relevant skills in Grade One, you should not progress to Grade Two. If you didn't learn all of the relevant skills in Grade Eight, you shouldn't progress to Grade Nine. Most school districts pass EVERYONE from Grade One to Grade Eight, regardless of whether or not that student is capable of doing the work required at that grade level. It's normally their policy. More failing students would mean more opportunities for slow learners to catch up.

Where I live, graduation requirements are more than satisfactory and don't need to be raised.

requrements for high school graduation does not need to be rised or lowered.
They has to be in level for the work the graduate will do, and of course, the contents has to be changed over the time, in the way to mach actual reality.

I think requirements should stay the same. Even if they may be difficult, i think it is important that society push itself and have more educated people as a result. However, i think requirments should be lightened for those who do not speak english as a first language or have special education needs. For example, at my school, many hispanics are unable to pass the High School Exit Exam just because they can't write or understand English well. And i don't blame them--I wouldn't be able to do it in another language i had only been learning for a couple years! But except in those cases, we just shouldn't lower them. I'm all for things being a challenge, and the last thing we need to do is provide for laziness.

Higher, this way, the high school degree would have more weight/value in the professional world. Therefore, the poorer people, while they may have to take a few more years of classes, would be more prepared for the work force (if they couldn't pay for college). Also, while it may cause more stress on people, it would better prepare them for college.

Well, each town and city has their own high school requirements. In my town, the requirement to graduate is that you need 120 credits. You must take math and reading every year. You must take history for two years. Science for 2 years. Physical education and Health for 4 years. And choose other classes to your liking like wood shop, home economics, statistics, metal shop, typing, microsoft office, etc. So I think it should stay the same as long as they fulfill their credit requirements.

I think you are asking the wrong question. Is not so much as raising or lowering the graduation requirements, it is having a goal of children leaving high school with a certain level of knowledge and being ready for the next level of education and growth. We need our next generation to be as prepared as possible, to know how to get answers to their questions and how to learn. Rather than think of it as a 'pain' to have to meet certain requirements, it would be better if children looked at education as a privilege and something that they should make the most of. Education is an opportunity to better yourself, you should take advantage of it.

Higher the standards but also raise the pay of teachers but on a percentage basis... hence teachers get paid higher for the better grades the children get in standardized tests.
Lowering the requirements would merely lower our society's standard..... hence creating a deficient populous.
If welfare and other government programs were cut, we could increase law enforcement and these slime buckets would be forced to work. Anyone disagree????

Lowering the education standards IS NEVER the Answer!!!!!!

The same, possibly even higher. Everyone one learns differently but I believe that the main reason the success rate isn't higher is because the kids today aren't applying themselves as much as possible. They have to many distractions. So to lower it would only enable them to slack off more, which would do absolutely nothing for them in the long run.

They should be raised so that more students are better prepared for college. For many students a high school diploma means NOTHING. They have never read a book cover to cover, they've cheated on many of their assignments, and they are as dumb as a photograph of a horse. Society needs to know that a high school graduate is smart and well-rounded. If students don't graduate---oh well---like Judge Smails said in Caddyshack, "The world needs ditch diggers too."

I think the requirements should be raised. You state the argument of more homeless, etc. We are already turning out young adults who can't read or write. If there were a higher standard for graduation, teachers would be forced to teach better and stop moving students on to the next level just to get rid of them. Parents also could help a lot with their kids learning by taking a better interest in what they are doing. Everyone wants to blame the school systems, but some of the blame lays square on the parents shoulders. As far as extra curricular activities go, they are fine to a point. Students are in school to learn not how well they can play football etc. If they can't keep up their grades, they shouldn't play. Life is not easy and letting students take the easy way is not doing them any favors. I am not answering this to get 10 points. I am answering this because of how I feel.

well, it was a lot lower when I went to school ( class of '90) but there were less things to know about. the more time that goes by the more things that grads need to know. a lot of people that I know have to take classes now to update their resume. but if they cut out some things that are obsolete, then we can keep the requirements the same or even lower them. I think that would be the way to go.

What on God's Green Earth are you talking about? How will raising requirements for graduation cause all of those things?

I think the standards for graduation should be raised. No rinky-dink senior schedule of Television Production workshop, gym, ceramics, and a English course. (4 hours in the block scheduling I'm used to). These courses provide nothing challenging or worth the tax-payers money when students take these without any intent on going into a field where they would be useful. I would change the required classes to graduate to include more math, science, and english. This would not only make our kids stack up better in the global comparision of schools but it would prepare them for college better.

Just because the class reqs change doesn't mean you have to add class time or anything like that to the day to take away from extra-curriculars or family time. At most kids would have to do a little bit more homework each night, and for a chance at being more prepared for thier future I think they can sacrifice watching the mindless entertainment on TV or hanging out with friends till all hours of the night.
