Subsidies provide something for nothing, in order words, the only qualification is the inability or unwilliness to work. Subsidies cause paralysis in creativity or thinking. Why should one take action to alleviate their poverty when someone else will do it for them? Please understand I am referring to able-bodied people that do not have learning disabilities that do not able them to function. For the most part, everyone can perform a useful role in society. If they can, they should. Subsidies should be a VERY limited option (either by time limit or if absolutely medically required).
