He developed motor neurone disease as a young person. The disease is debilitating, which means he got worse and worse as time goes by. It doesn't affect his brain though; just his limbs (the disease destroys motor neurone cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing). Despite the disease, he's remains one of the world's leading theorectical physicists, best known for his mathematical proof of the Big Bang theory.
