Does alcohol reduce the effectiveness of amoxicillin?

There is no specific interaction between alcohol and amoxicillin. Of course, drinking heavily can make it hard to take any medication, or to keep down breakfast, for that matter. You may hear people say they got sick after heavy partying while on antibiotics, but usually this is not an interaction.

The antibiotic that CANNOT be taken with any alcohol (not a sniff, not even heavy alcohol based aftershave!) is metronidazole (Flagyl). It causes a nasty reaction with alcohol similar to the drug antabuse which is used to try and help alcoholics stay sober.
