Orange is symbolic of Irish Protestants while green is symbolic of Irish Catholics. On the Irish flag, there is an orange stripe, a green stripe and a white stripe. The orange is for the Protestants, the green is for the Catholics and the white is for the hope of peace between the two.

Good answer-brief yet concise. The symbolism behind the colors of the Irish flag is beautiful-if only it could really be so! I asked a few coworkers the same question and they said it was a Scottish tradition to snub the Irish. I don't know if that has any validity though.
Actually Seraphin is correct her answer covers it well. and you can tell your coworkers that it is not the Scottish snubbing their Irish cousins.

The Scots were sent to Ireland because they were protestant. So your coworkers are right, in a sense.

Tweak is an understatement.
The Irish view the Scots much like Blacks in the US view the Klansman. It would take too much space to document the 'Troubles' in Ireland. But suffice it to say that wearing Orange on St. Patrick's day is like wearing a White hood on Martin Luther King's birthday.

Protestants suck balls, get out of ireland

The English (not really the Scots) were AWFUL to the Irish, but it's what makes us! I don't agree with the things the English or the slave-owners, but should I move from the south or pay reparations?
Protestants: wear orange! Let's relegate that part of Irish history to where it belongs: history!

The orange stands for n. Ireland. St. Patrick was Catholic, and so was Northern Ireland before England gave land away to the protestants in England and Scotland to try and breed out the Catholics.

The orange in the flag means that N. Ireland will always remain in the hearts of the Irish Free State, which is Catholic. Like St. Patrick.

It is not merely a religious difference. The orange symbolizes the British loyalists, while the green represents the true Irish. The British have always tried to subjugate the Irish. The British should get out of Ireland.

Wearin orange on st Paddys day if your over here will generally get u a good kicking so im just givin ye all a heads up.

Wearing Orange on St. Patricks day is either a coincidence or a show of being an Orangeman and snubbing St. Patricks day. I'm from Donegal right beside northern Ireland so I know what I'm talking about. As well anyone who says Irish people have lots of hate for scottish people have a lot to learn.

It's the opposite in fact. Irish people's favourite country and people beside their own is Scotland.

wow you are smart. i'm wearing all three colors today. weird.

St Patrick wasn't even Irish anyway. He was a Roman priest sent by the pope to "cleanse" the Irish isles of the pagans. They were either to be converted, banished or executed.

See the Scots were did have a few things in common so they blended together with the Irish sorta good. The Scots were able to relate to the Celtic ways, they both had similiar traditions and they both had a deep seated hatred of the British

MY MOTHER WAS FROM CANADA, AND WE ALWAYS WORE RED, AS SHE SAID THE FRENCH WORE RED ON ST. PATRICKS' DAY

Ok, there is another side to the story, all Scottish people (like me) wear orange. My family came to the aid of the king of england as the Catholics, Irish, and some other guy tried to overthrow him because the king had promised peace (which never did come) if they helped him.

Continuation... The Scottish defeated the invaders. They now wear orange (which I will) to show that they defeated the attack against those who wore green. This is the true story,my grandparents were 100% Scottish, they would know, we also have a diary log from one of the family members.
