How long of a lead should you walk your dog on? And how do you train him to not pull you on a walk?

you can walk a dog on any length. To train a dog not to pull when they walk is that you can get a prong or pinch collar (it look really mean but it is not, it is acctually the nicest training collar you can get). And then train you dog to heel, and to do that have lots of treats and stand with your dog on your left side and tell your dog to heel and pop your dogs leash and walk about 3 steps at first and then when you stop tell your dog to sit and give them a treat. Once your dog gets the hang of it and continue to increase the amounts of steps your dog can go until they do not pull anymore.

The lead can be any length. You would not want it so long that it could get tangled in something. To train him not to pull, use a choke collar. When they pull hard enough against it, it will impair their breathing. They will soon learn not to pull you.

A typical dog leash should be 6 feet long to give your dog ample length to walk in front of you without pulling you along. If you are in the process of training your dog, such as training your dog to walk at your side and obey "walk", "heel" "sit" and "stay" commands, you should use a shorter leash of about 3 feet in length. In that case, you can still use the same 6 foot leash, just wrap in around your hand to shorten.

They also make 15 - 16 foot leashes and these are also used primarily for training (i.e., letting the dog out along the leash, calling "come" and being able to reel the dog back in).

But for general, all purpose walking, a six foot leash is standard.

If you are trying to train your dog not to pull on the leash, the best and most effective method is to use a special leash called a "Halti Leader". The Halti fits over your dog's face but does not restrict the mouth (it is NOT a muzzle). It works just like a horse's bridle but does not use a "bit" in the mouth. The Halti allows you to steer your dog by the head instead of the neck. They are designed to eliminate pulling and lunging and are VERY effective.

6' is fine. I tried all kinds of differnt collars to get my dog to stop pulling (incl Halti and others). The only one that worked for me was the kind with the inward-facing metal spikes that pinch (but DO NOT cut) when they pull. It sounds cruel, but it stopped him quickly, and now he doesn't need one anymore. Good luck.

your dog should walk beside you or two feet in front. if he starts pulling you you just pull on the leash so that he would stop and walk where he should just continue doing this and he won't pull you any more
