If you can get to Okinawa, go!! The sites and foods are wonderful. But be prepared for typhoon season, tsumani warnings, and limited water during the dry season. You will have to buy a car when you are there as Japan has a "no-car-older-than-twenty-five-years" law.
Two important things: Learn some the language and customs. Something I never did was to pick up the language, but if you will be there for that long try to learn a little bit of the language. Customs are importatnt just to be polite, such as leave your chopsticks on the chop rest and never on top of the plate/bowl over the food.
I am guessing that your son is military so you would be a dependent of sorts. If you can you can always get a part-time job through the job office (for civilians) there. If can connect with a "host" family through the military, they can help with other questions that you might have.
(If you are USAF, I apologize for the USMC links as those were the only ones I could find).
