I think it's a very misunderstood issue - the other answers confirm this. You can't simply label it "murder" and feel satisfied with yourself for being morally surperior. It's not that simple.

If an abortion takes place early on, this "human being" is still only a collection of cells, no bigger than the period at the end of this sentence.

I refuse to decide whether it is right or wrong, however, because, I will admit, I am no expert on the subject. But neither are most of the people who have answered "Murder!" It is not our place to make that decision, nor is it anyone's place to harass a woman who is trying to decide whether or not to go through with one.

I think it is a p iss poor means of birth control. Sometimes it is the only answer like when the mothers life is in danger at any rate the government has no business in it and neither do the do gooders. It is a privit thing and should be treated as such. I wouldn't want my daughters only choice to be in a back alley with a coat hanger and for you younger people that is how it was done in the 50's and before, many woman died and became stereol from that method.

Abortion is irresponsibility not a 'choice'. The choice is not an issue after the baby is conceived; the choice is in being responsible before the baby is conceived.

I have often pondered the two exceptions often cited as extremes for an abortion - rape and life of the mother.

Even in the case of rape, two wrongs do not make a right. It is not the baby's fault. The baby can be given up for adoption if the mother finds it too painful to raise the baby. The demand for babies is so high that adoption is almost assured. I know this for a truth after seeing two of my friend's families go through the adoption process. In my own heart, I have decided the issue should I ever have to face it. The baby is an innocent and my own pain cannot outweigh that baby's right to live.

In the case of the life of the mother, I am a mother of four children. I wouldn't have to think twice to put my life at risk to save them.

The choice to respect the life of the child is always the choice of maturity. Abortion is the choice of selfishness.

It's your body, your choice. no one single person will have the same feelings about it as you do, so they haven't got a clue. It has to be a decision that is personal, private and one that you will be able to live with.

On the one hand, you have a life force likely destined to become a human being.

On the other hand, this being is not yet born so therefore does not qualify as a human being (i.e. doesn't breathe air until after birth - a requirement of mammals).

There's a lot of gray area, so here's how I have boiled it down:

To give in to the anti-abortionists who claim it's murder is to basically give them power over your right to have sex. They claim life begins at conception. Therefore, their logic dictates that the actions that take place from the moment a male ejaculates into a fertile vagina should be subject to legislative restrictions (i.e. do not interrupt the creation of the likely being to be born). The logic goes further as it pertains to birth control as well (i.e. abstinence is the only acceptable form of birth control).

Therefore, given the logic of anti-abortionists, I am left with no choice but to say that the woman and man confronted with the issue of pregnancy make their own informed decision based on their own circumstances. After all, would you want others dictating your sexual practices - even if you are married? Does society want to go back to the day of black market abortion doctors with no regard for the woman's well being? Do you think abstinence is the only moral form of birth control and that condoms, pills, and other forms of birth control are the work of the devil?

The choice is clear. Abortions are legal and moral. Sex is legal and moral. Dictating to others how they should lead their own lives is immoral, pompous, unethical and wrong.
