Well not drink a lot, but maybe one or two drinks...just want to make sure before I do so...

On Thursday I took AZITHROMYCIN, generic for ZITHROMAX. Wanted to know if it will be okay if I have a couple of drinks/alcohol on Saturday?

Yes, you can drink alcohol or smoke after taking azithromycin. Your sexual contacts need to be treated as well. I always use doxycycline 100mg twice a day for 10-14 days. And drinking is not recommended with doxycycline, as it may make you vomit up the pill. OK, I just looked it up, the way to take azithromycin is to take 1 gram of it all at once. Then you aren't supposed to have sex for 7 days afterwards, apparantly because the azithromycin has a long half life, it stays in your blood for several days, and it may take that long to kill the chlamydia. But, yeah, you can drink. These cures don't always work the first time. Sometimes you have to take another course, or a different antibiotic.

Alcohol may cause antibiotics to be less effective. But some say this is a myth. I believe it depends on which antibiotics you are on.

There is a generally held belief that alcohol should not be consumed while on a course of oral antibiotics. This advice is correct if a patient is taking metronidazole, cephamandole (may cause a disulfiram-like reaction), and possibly oral ketoconazole (may cause facial flushing). However there is no contraindication to the consumption of alcohol with other antibiotics.

"For almost all antibiotics, drinking alcohol is no problem. Only metronidazole (Flagyl) produces a number of unpleasant side-effects when taken in combination with alcohol. This product is prescribed for certain sexually-transmitted diseases and vaginal infections. You might suffer from loss of appetite, nausea, headaches and, sometimes, a red face. This possibly also applies for ketoconazole (Nizoral). Certain other medicines also cause problems in combination with alcohol."

You should read the instructions that came with the meds. Some meds react negatively when you drink or smoke. And if there are no specific rules listed on this, then it still wouldn't hurt to stay away from them while in the recovery period. Alcohol and cigerrettes will slow the healing process even if they don't react with the drug.
