Yes!! Taiwan is a country but most of countries don’t admit it because of china. China just want Taiwan to be apart of them, yet it's independent and it is a country not a county! it has its own currency national flag even president so please don’t call it a county of china it's a country- Taiwan thank you! ^^
By the way here's for "naklubyob" do you know why Taiwan couldn't use their own flag in Olympics (in fact the flag in Olympics wasn't their national flag) they couldn't use their flag because china gave pressures to Greek, not only Greek but also every country. And they were afraid of China for China's great power of economy.

No! It's a exile gov since 1949 during the chinese civil war.It exists just 'cause of the support of the America! who want to to maintain the separation state of China for his own interest. But what the US done has invited hatred from 13 billion chinese

Taiwan is a province of China.

No, Taiwan is NOT a country.
Taiwan is the 23rd province of China.

If Taiwan was indeed a nation:
- why is it not in the UN?
- why is it not in the CIA databook?
- why is it still asking for independence?

Clearly NOT! Every independant country has its official identification in the UN. Taiwan has not! It was exiled from the UN many many years ago since its government(originally took charge of Mainland China) was driven to Taiwan because of its unhuman administration and disaproval to democracy.

Hey, it's common sense that Taiwan is part of China, it's one of China's provinces, like Szechuan.

It depends on the country you ask. Vatican City says yes. China says no. It's recognized by several countries as an independent country, but China says it's a province. US says it's a territory. Vatican says it's a country.

Yes, they are, although pink-o Communist Red China, and their bosom buddies in George Bush's WHite House, would beg to differ.

Make sure you visit the Taiwanese gov't website...

The answer to this is "maybe". The definition of a "country" is subject to the opinion of each nation on Earth through "recognition" of another country. For instance, the US recognizes Israel as a sovereign nation, although Iran does not. In Iran's eyes, Israel is not a nation, but to the US, it is. The same applies to Taiwan...which, until the early 1970s was recognized to be the legitimate "Government in Exile" by the US. At that point, the US changed its policy to formally recognize the mainland China government, and the US now straddles the border between openly calling Taiwan its own nation and calling it a "renegade province" as China calls it. By-and-large, it operates as its own independent nation and is treated as such by many nations on Earth...but it is not officially recognized by every nation.

Is your country a member of the United Nations? Or does it fly its own flag on the Olympics? Is Taiwan the same with your country?

If you really want to get technical. Republic of China (R.O.C.) is a offical name for Taiwan. Taiwan is the name of the main island that R.O.C. have sovereignty over. R.O.C. is recognized by about 26 countries in the world. The most prominent of which is the Vatican. The R.O.C. was removed from the United Nations in the 70s and replaced by People's Republic of China. In recent years, all attempts to join any kind of international organization by R.O.C. has been interfered by China. Even organizations like the World Health Organization. In response to someone's post over flags that's shown during the Olympics, China didn't just force Greece to not allow the actually R.O.C. flag. The Olympic commitee disallows the use of the R.O.C.'s name (Chinese Taipei is used instead), it's flag and it's national anthem. Ironic because the Olympic games is suppose to be above politics.
